Aadhaar for NRIs: eligibility, how to update and when it is needed

NRIs who hold an Indian passport are eligible for Aadhaar. Existing Aadhaar holders can update their overseas address online via the UIDAI portal. Aadhaar is required for e-filing ITR, linking to PAN, and some banking KYC processes — but it is not compulsory for NRIs who have never enrolled.

Aadhaar is optional but useful for India banking and ITR

NRIs with an Indian passport are eligible for Aadhaar. If you have one, link it to PAN for ITR filing (now mandatory for existing Aadhaar holders). You can update your Aadhaar address to an overseas address online via UIDAI's NRI update service. New enrolment must be done in India or at select overseas locations.

Key points

Aadhaar-PAN linking for NRIs

Aadhaar-PAN linking is mandatory for all Indian citizens who hold both documents, including NRIs. An unlinked PAN becomes inoperative, blocking ITR filing, TDS refunds and certain financial transactions.

To link: log in to the Income Tax e-filing portal → Profile Settings → Link Aadhaar. Enter your Aadhaar number and name as on Aadhaar. OTP is sent to the Aadhaar-linked mobile number.

NRIs who do not have Aadhaar are exempt from the mandatory linking requirement — the CBDT has clarified that only those who are eligible and enrolled must link.

Updating Aadhaar from abroad

Go to the UIDAI self-service update portal (ssup.uidai.gov.in).

Log in with your Aadhaar number and OTP to your registered mobile.

Select 'Update Address' and upload an overseas address proof (passport, overseas bank statement or residence certificate issued by the Indian embassy or consulate).

Once approved, the Aadhaar record is updated. The physical Aadhaar card still shows the old address but the UIDAI database reflects the new one.

Frequently asked questions

Is Aadhaar mandatory for NRIs to file ITR?

Not if you do not have Aadhaar. ITR filing requires Aadhaar only if you possess one. If you have never enrolled, PAN alone is sufficient for filing.

Can I use Aadhaar for NRE/NRO KYC?

Yes, Aadhaar is accepted as identity and address proof for banking KYC in India. Overseas address can be submitted separately as an additional document.

What if I cannot receive OTP on my Aadhaar-linked number because I have a foreign SIM?

Update your mobile number to an active Indian number (a family member's number or an Indian SIM you retain) at an Aadhaar enrolment centre during your next India visit. Alternatively, use UIDAI's face authentication app at select centres.
